How to choose lamp dimensions and hanging height

Measure the space for the complete fitting, from the mounting point to its lowest part. Shade diameter and overall height are different measurements.

Read dimensions carefully

ParameterMeaningCommon mistake
Overall heightThe complete height including suspension where specified.Confusing it with shade height.
Width / diameterThe fitting’s horizontal size.Using the packaging dimensions instead.
Projection / depthHow far it extends from a wall or into the room.Overlooking a door, cupboard or walkway.
Adjustment rangeThe manufacturer’s permitted minimum and maximum position.Assuming every cable or rod can be shortened.
Cut-out / recess depthThe installation space for a recessed fitting.Checking only the visible front diameter.

Above a table or kitchen island

Compare the fitting with the furniture and how people use the space. Check the view across the table, the position of doors and cupboards, and access for cleaning. A fixed universal hanging height does not suit every ceiling, fitting or household.

Mark the outline with paper or a cardboard template before ordering a large model. Check the effect both standing and seated. Make sure the fitting will not interfere with normal movement.

What to check with the installer

  • The mounting point, type of ceiling or wall, fitting weight and suitable fixings.
  • Required cut-out, clearance and ventilation for recessed lights.
  • The position and accessibility of a separate driver.
  • The exact height adjustment permitted by the instructions.
  • Whether the selected variant has the same dimensions as the photographed model.

Questions before buying

Can I shorten a suspension myself?

Only use the method permitted by the manufacturer. Have installation work assessed and completed by a suitable professional.

Is the shade’s diameter enough to judge whether the lamp fits?

No. Check the complete width, height, projection, mounting and the space around the fitting.
