Types of lights: choose the right fitting

Choose the lighting effect and mounting position before the shape. Two similar-looking fittings can illuminate a room very differently.

Look at the direction of the light

A closed shade, an open bulb and a reflector produce different effects. Check whether light goes down, up, onto the wall or around the room. A photograph of a glowing fitting does not establish its usable light output.

Consider whether the source will be visible from your usual position, including when seated. An exposed decorative bulb with a high output can feel uncomfortable even in a visually light fitting.

Replaceable bulb or integrated LED?

  • Replaceable source: lets you change parameters later, but it must fit the luminaire and meet the manufacturer’s requirements.
  • Integrated LED: allows different fitting shapes. Check whether the module and driver can be replaced, by whom, and whether parts are available. Integrated does not automatically mean unrepairable.
  • Bulb included: look for an explicit statement in the product information. A socket specification or a photograph does not confirm that a bulb is supplied.

Choose a track system as a complete system

Single-circuit, three-circuit and magnetic tracks are different systems. A similar appearance does not prove compatibility between product families. Check the track, power feed, connectors, end caps, adapters and luminaires. Have electrical changes carried out by an electrician.

Questions before buying

Does a three-light fitting give three times more light?

Only with comparable sources and conditions. Each source’s lumens, shades and direction matter.

Can every pendant be shortened?

No. The permitted adjustment and shortening method must be stated in the model’s instructions. Some parts must not be cut or modified.
