Lighting buying guide

Outdoor lighting: entrance, terrace, garden and facade

Outdoor selection involves more than rain. Consider mounting position, temperature, corrosion, light distribution and convenient controls.

Start with the task

LocationPurposeBefore buying
EntranceSee the door, lock and approach.Avoid glare when approaching; consider movement and dusk sensors.
TerraceLight a seating area or table.Check the seated view and separate switching.
Path / stepsMake the route and steps visible.Assess positions, direction and potential impacts.
FacadeHighlight texture or selected details.Check angle and reach; avoid shining into windows or beyond the required area.
UnderwaterLight a demanding environment.Choose a product explicitly approved for the application and a suitable installation.

IP is only the beginning

Check outdoor approval, temperature range, material and maintenance conditions. A wall under a canopy and a ground-level fitting after heavy rain face different conditions. Consider corrosion resistance, especially in demanding surroundings.

An IP65 marking does not authorise pressure-washing. Correct connections, sealing and mounting are as important as the enclosure. Follow the instructions.

Sensors and controls

  • Check detection range and angle and whether they are adjustable. Detection can vary with the direction of approach.
  • Confirm whether a dusk sensor is included and thresholds are adjustable.
  • For app control, check connectivity, range at the installation point and required accessories.
  • Solar lights depend on charging conditions and batteries. Compare the model’s declarations rather than expecting identical performance throughout the year.

Light only where needed

Choose the direction and output required for the task. Excess light can disturb people and neighbours, reduce visual comfort and waste energy. Timers and sensors can limit operation when light is not needed.

Questions before buying

Can every IP65 light be buried in the ground?

No. Ground mounting, loads, drainage and operating conditions must be explicitly permitted by the manufacturer.

Can an indoor light go outside under a canopy?

Do not assume so. Moisture, condensation and temperature changes occur even without direct rain.
